Afghan court imprisons Pakistani journalist for four years

An Afghan court sentenced a Pakistani journalist to four-year imprisonment for “contacting terrorists”, officials said Wednesday. After contacting the Pakistani Taliban ARY News reporter Faizullah Khan was arrested in April by the Afghan security forces in Nangarhar province near the Pakistani border.
“We have found photos of him, showing him with a gun among terrorists,” National Security Court of Nangarhar head Wafiullah Usmani told AFP, adding, “He is accused of contacting terrorists and he did not possess travel documents on him when he was arrested.” Khan was arrested with two Pakistani Taliban on the Afghan side of the border, he said. The sentence was passed on July 9 and Provincial governor spokesman Ahmad Zai Abdulzai, said the journalist was arrested for “threatening national security”.

Pakistan embassy in Kabul official Akhtar Munir said that the consulate in Jalalabad was assisting the reporter, who would make appeal against the verdict. “The Afghan government has been approached at various levels to help in releasing the journalist,” he added.
