Amir Khan returns to Pakistani village where he grew up… but has to call in the heavies

By Steven Donaldson

Amir Khan returned to his roots in the Pakistani village of Matore this week… but he has had to be accompanied by a team of armed guards.

The British boxer was born in Bolton, Lancashire but spent much of his childhood in Pakistan before beginning his boxing career back in the UK as a teenager.

The 26-year-old is currently travelling around Pakistan as he takes time off between fights to prepare for his marriage to Faryal Makhdoom this year.

Speaking in the country’s capital Lahore last week, Khan said: ‘I was terrified about Pakistan but I can see there is no security issue, no threats to me.’

Well, that hasn’t stopped him from calling in armed security, as the picture above, posted on Instagram, shows.

The picture was accompanied with the words, ‘with my 24-7 armed guards in Pakistan’, while a tweet shortly after read: ‘Visiting my village (Matore) where we was all brought up in pakistan. Not been since ages. Will be amazing. Looking forward to it.’
