Putin Accuses Turkey Of Shooting Down Russian Jet To Protect IS Oil Trade

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ankara of shooting down a Russian warplane to protect supplies of oil from the Islamic State group to Turkey.

“We have every reason to think that the decision to shoot down our plane was dictated by the desire to protect the oil supply lines to Turkish territory,” Putin said during a news conference on the fringes of UN climate talks in Paris.

Putin, speaking at the global climate conference in Paris, added that the decision to shoot down the plane was a “huge mistake” and that he had not met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday, despite them both being in Paris.

Erdogan has denied the claims that Turkey buys oil from Islamic State and called these claims “slander”.

Turkey shot down the Russian bomber near the Syrian-Turkish border on November 24.
