Voith has signed a €200m deal to kit out a 1410MW extension to the Tarbela hydropower plant in Pakistan.

The contract with the nation’s Water and Power Development Authority includes the supply of three generators, three 470MW Francis turbines (pictured), the automation systems and electrical and mechanical balance-of-plant systems.

Tarbela already provides 16% of Pakistan’s electricity and the extension will boost capacity from 3478MW to 4888MW.

The work at the Indus River facility, which is 110km from capital Islamabad and was built in 1974, is being financed by the World Bank.

The automation and electrical balance-of-plant systems will be developed and supplied by Voith Hydro’s facility in Heidenheim, Germany.

The company’s division in Shanghai, China, will be responsible for the manufacturing the three vertical shaft Francis turbine units and the three 522MVA generators.
